The story of Caleb, the first Native American to graduate from Harvard College in 1665. It's told by Bethia who keeps a diary of her life from when she met Caleb. I was engrossed by this book especially the description of the life of a young woman like Bethia at a time when women were treated lesser than men. Caleb's story was really only a backdrop to Bethia's story and I think I would have liked to know more about how Caleb actually felt about some of the things happening around him. You are only given glimpses of this when he speaks to Bethia. The book also raises questions about culture v religion and how they relate to each other. Excellent book.
