November Newsletter and Family Blessings

Well it's happened again - a new month has come around way too quickly!  A new month means a new newsletter and I've just sent out the November Newsletter.

This month is the final instalment of the Family Blessings block of the month quilt and for Things I've Learned Along the Way I show how I bind my quilts. One of the things I do is (almost) always cut my bindings the same width and save any leftovers so that I can then join them together to use in binding my scrappy quilts.

With the finish of our project, I introduce the block of the month for 2014 - The Word of God which is still very much a work in progress.

I also share some exciting new plans and the Inspiration Column is all about the unconditional love that God has for us even when we do things that disappoint.

Family Blessings Block of the Month...

If you are interested in the Family Blessings project it's now available as a block of the month project on my website.

It's a seven part project and the patterns are available as a pattern a month for seven months or as a complete set of seven patterns.

The Word stitcheries

My Trip

As it turned out My Trip journal cover was quick to make.

On the front I stitched a label - My Trip - which I bordered with some ric-rac braid.

The little stitcheries around it represents postage stamps from different places I visit. But, I think they could also represent snapshots of places I've been! It's up to you to decide.

Anyway, they were blanket stitch appliqued onto the cover.

I made a twisted cord to hold it closed because my journals are usually filled with 'stuff' that can make them quite thick.  I added the handles to make carrying it around easier.

On the back, I added a heart with a suitcase stitchery.  On the suitcase there's a sticker that says 'Go' and the tag on the handle says 'Me'.

Now the journal cover is finished I just have to sort out my pens, pencils, glue, scissors ...and whatever else I want to take!

My Trip is available as a printed or pdf pattern on my website  and as a pdf pattern on my Etsy shop.

My Trip

Fly Away

I've put the finishing touches on my Fly Away project so now I'm ready to do just that - fly away!

Finished size of the pouch is 9" x 9" when closed. It's approx. the same size as my Cottage Threads pouch which I find just perfect for my latest stitchery projects. There's plenty of room for the project, my hoop, threads and a needlecase. 

The needlecase is 5" x 9" when open and is a similar size to my Love to Sew needlecase. Inside there are 2 pockets for needles and a pocket for threads or my thread cutter. I also added some felt to hold the needles in use.

The pattern is available in printed and pdf formats on my website and pdf format in my Etsy shop.

Now I've finished the bag, I will have to decide what stitchery projects I'm going to take with me.

Fly Away

Fly Away and Sweet Pea Dolly Quilt WIP

I had a very productive weekend - finished both the small quilt and the novel (will tell you about that next time).

Once I had finished the quilting, it was then a matter of choosing the binding. I narrowed it down to two fabrics - a reddish pink and a red.

The red is also from Judie Rothermal range - I can't remember which one - but it looked a bit too bright with the other fabrics so I opted for the reddish pink.

The finished size of the quilt is 16" x 16" - which should just fit nicely on Mum's new cupboard.  I think she will be surprised and pleased to receive it.

The pattern is available in both printed and pdf formats on my website and pdf format in my Etsy shop.

House and Garden

When I make up a new design, I usually produce both printed and pdf versions of the pattern but sometimes (usually due to technical hitches) I only manage to get the printed one finished.

This design - House and Garden - was one of those patterns that only had a printed format.

Yesterday, I finally got around to producing the pdf pattern.

Now, the printed version and pdf versions are available on my website. And the pdf version is also available on my etsy shop.

I Pouches

My I Pouches are now finished.

The original plan was to make an I Pad cover; I Phone pouch and an I Pod pouch but sometimes things change along the way and I decided to make two phone pouches instead.

I've been using the phone pouch from my It's in the Bag design which I've found so useful, but having only one pouch is a bit of a problem when it's time to be washed.  So having a couple of extras will be great.

The same applies to my I Pad cover - it will be great having a change.

I'm still loving these fabrics (Noteworthy by Sweetwater)!

Summertime

The quilting on the Summertime project didn't take long at all. 

I then had to make a decision concerning the binding. I had enough fabric in a green pattern to go around the whole quilt but wasn't very happy with it.  I left it on my work table overnight and in the morning I still wasn't happy with it so decided to go with my next option which was to join different fabrics together to make the binding. 

 I preferred that much more - it fits in better with the scrappy look of the project.

 Here it is all finished.

Size is 15.5" x 23.5".  It will look nice on my table and will remind me of summer which seems to have been washed away here in paradise.

Summer Totes

Both of my Summer Totes are now finished.

The applique bag is the same size as the stitchery design (16" x 16" excluding handles) and has big pockets inside as well.

I added a pocket on the front as well as a button band (this is just for decoration). The purple buttons were bought at L'ucello - aren't they great? The flower is blanket stitch applique and I also added a yo-yo flower. Ric-rac braid finishes it off. The blue pattern fabric I used for both bags was the original fabric that caught my attention. I'm glad I bought it.

The applique bag ended up with my sister.  She really liked it and it's so nice knowing that something I made brought such joy! This meant that the stitchery bag was left on its own so I decided to list it on my website. You can see it here.

Kookaburra Cottage

While at the AQM I caught up with Majella from Kookaburra Cottage. I've always been a fan of Majella's quilts ever since she was in the Chook Shed. Remember them?  Their designs were the first patchwork patterns I ever bought. 

Majella is still making beautiful patterns specialising in applique.  She used to do mainly blanket stitch applique by hand but now she's doing machine applique using invisible thread.

This design is a ten part block of the month and finished size is 78" x 78".  What I love about all of Majella's designs are that they are very scrappy which means you can use whatever you have on hand and only have to buy border fabrics. This pattern is called Songbird and I think it's pretty amazing.  You could work the applique in your preferred way - needleturn, machine, blanket stitch - and it would look nice.

Majella has made some special children's quilts over time - Mum and I made Noah and Friends for my niece's baby - and she's come up with another beautiful quilt. This time for little girls.

This one called Dolly and Me really stole my heart.  It is so cute.  The thing I like about it is that it is almost like a 'busy book'.  I remember making a busy book for my boys with things for them to do like buttons, zips, ribbons to tie, etc.

In this quilt, for example, in the centre block with the little girl holding a dolly in her pocket, the dolly is made separately and can be removed from the pocket. The same with the teddy bear on the top left block - the little bear is made separately and can be removed from the bear's arms.And the little girls' dresses in the middle block at the top can be lifted up to reveal some shorts.

Each of the blocks could be made into cushions or even into smaller wallhangings. Like the Songbird quilt, it's also very scrappy.

The design is a nine part block of the month and the finished size of the quilt is 61" x 65". The complete set of nine patterns is available on my website.
